High Rollers

George Washington Ferris, a civil engineer from Illinois, invented the first Ferris wheel for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Today, every county fair and parking lot carnival has a Ferris wheel. So no biggie, right?

The High Roller in Las Vegas is definitely not your average Ferris wheel. Technically an observation wheel, it’s the biggest in the world at 550 feet tall and holds the current Guinness World Record for the largest observation wheel.

You can’t miss it. Literally.

Each air-conditioned transparent pod holds up to 40 riders for the 30 minute ride that offers an unparalleled bird’s-eye view of the incandescent Las Vegas Strip. Naturally, the experience is coupled with an in-pod video and musical accompaniment.

Cocktails in hand, we boarded our pod just after dark for the 30 minute show.

There are very few words to adequately describe the Las Vegas skyline at night. Lights illuminate the desert…until they don’t and the blackness is thick along the edges.IMG_2267

Like everything else on the Strip, tickets for the High Roller are expensive — US$26.95 during the day and US$36.95 at night. Prices rise if you want an all you can drink package and entire pods can be rented out for private parties. Tickets can be purchased in advance (we found a Groupon deal), but there are lots of deals and offers once you arrive in Las Vegas.

  1. We had an entire pod to ourselves when we went last year. Drinks in hand we had a dance party in our pod! Loved the views of the dessert. Defiantly worth it and we paid full price!
